In a ceremony fit for a king, the head of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons enters Oslo City Hall. Standing alongside the Nobel Prize Award Committee, Ahmet Uzumcu patiently waits for the day's headlining event: Receiving the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize. Uzumcu is the director general of the OPCW, which won the award for its role in removing chemical weapons from Syria. (SOUNDBITE) (English) NOBEL LAUREATE THE ORGANIZATION FOR THE PROHIBITION OF CHEMICAL WEAPONS (OPCW), REPRESENTED BY DIRECTOR GENERAL, AHMET UZUMCU, SAYING: "Chemical weapons evolved over time, with the discovery of new and deadlier agents. But, whatever their form, they share one common purpose - to invoke fear and submission through the horrifying nature of their impact. Scores of victims beyond the battlefield have attested to this. In accepting this prize on behalf of the OPCW, I also pay homage to all these victims." The OPCW dispatched experts to Syria after a sarin gas attack killed more than 1,400 people in August. In an interview at his hotel, Uzumcu called the attack appalling. (SOUNDBITE)(English) DIRECTOR GENERAL OF OPCW AHMET UZUMCU, SAYING: "The only consolation that we could find was that those attacks led to renewed efforts by the international community to eliminate them. That is what is happening now." The OPCW deployment helped avert a U.S. military strike against the Syrian government. Uzumcu says he believes the award will foster more peace in the world. Laureates in physics, chemistry, economic sciences and medicine also received their Nobel Prizes on Tuesday.
