France’s General Commission of Terminology and Neologism has replaced the buzzword “hashtag” with a French term in an effort to keep the French language pure. The General Commission chose the term mot-dièse —which means sharp-word—based on the sharp sign. But the Huffington Post points out one small problem: the sharp-sign shown here   is not the same as the right-leaning pound sign. This is likely to have little effect on the Commission. The group’s purpose is to purify the French language, cleansing it of anglicisms. A spokesman from the the Quebec Board of French Language once said of social media sites, quote... “Borrowing too many words from English opens the door to a mishmash of French and English.” Though French citizens were up in arms about the change, The Verge reports citizens won’t be required to use the new term—just the French government. “...the new word will be used in government documentation and for all official state matters.” Hashtag isn’t the only word the government in Quebec is trying to replace, Metro News reports the Quebec Board of French Language also replaced ‘spam,’ ‘podcast,’ and ‘chat,’ among others. Although none of the new replacement words are used outside of the actual city of Quebec. According to MSN Tech , as soon as new words are approved by the French Academy -- the organization in France tasked with upholding the French language -- they are written into the nation’s laws.
