Four Questions You Have to Ask Before Eating
Dr. Travis Stork: Welcome back, I’m here with 32-year old Christine who’s ready to make some huge changes in her life. Now I think you said in your email, determined to be different. Is that accurate? Are you determined to be different?
Dr. Travis Stork: Well today we’re covering some of the easy steps from The Doctor Is In that you can use to get healthier starting today. Now the next step we’re going to talk about is what I call Eating to Savor Life.
And this is all about the beginning of Christine’s prescription for optimal wellness and this also is the beginning for those of you at home because you may know this for those of you who watch the show. I’m kind of anti-diet. I mean it’s anti-diet for a reason. You’ve been on some diets before right?
Dr. Travis Stork: And what’s happened?
Christine: If I stuck to it, I did loose a lot of weight. And then as soon as I finish then I would all come back on like on the liquid fast diet, I probably drop the most on the full liquid fast over 100 pounds and then as soon as I finish full liquid, I was getting right back up and passed where I was before.
Dr. Travis Stork: Over 90% of people will put all the way back on and then more, so diets don’t work. Diets are not the answer. What is a lifestyle? And that’s why I call this Eat to Savor Life because each and everyday every meal you eat shouldn’t be a mentality of how long do I have to be on this. It’s well, I love food. Food is a great part of my life. Actually I ask myself four questions before I eat every meal. Number one, is it delicious? Number two, is it healthy? Number three, this is a big one for me, and how will I feel 30 minutes from now? And then number four, will a steady diet of this make me and allow me to be healthy 10 years from now?
And I ask myself those four things before every single meal. So it has changed my perspective so that food is a positive part of my life. When I eat, I truly am savoring life. So let me ask you a question. I’m going to show this to everyone at home as well. This is borrowed from the Mediterranean diet pyramid.
And this is because a lot of you may or may not know this but they tend to live the longest because this diet pattern essentially is a perfect combination of carbohydrates and proteins, and good fats. We need all of these things but here’s the reality. You need to be basing the foods that you’re eating on what you see down here, all of that goodness. This is the base and fruits and vegetables, all those beautiful colors, whole grains, nuts, these are full of great fats and spices. And if you base your dietary pattern on these things, you’re eating to savor life.
And then here’s the beautiful thing about this pyramid. Fish is great for you. It’s great for your heart. Up here, there are still things that everyone enjoys eggs at the top. You know what, some chocolate. These things are meant to be enjoyed less often.
