Check out the fish that can change gender. Scientists have been studying the bluebanded goby fish and their ability to change from male to female or vice versa. Groups of gobies usually have one male and about five females, but if the male dies, then the most dominant of the females will change gender. Matthew Grober, associate professor of biology at Georgia State University, has been setting up studies with the fish that are funded by the National Science Foundation. Grober says: “We can detect within minutes, via changes in behavior, when a fish begins the transition, and it generally takes one to two weeks to complete the transition from female to male.”The fish can also change from male to female. The researchers put a group of male fish together in a tank, and all but one, the most dominant fish, changed into a female. Other animals have been known to change gender too. When this occurs in the wild, it is known as sequential hermaphroditism.Sea creatures like clown fish, limpets, Bluehead wrasse, and Northern Shrimp are naturally subject to gender changes.
