It impacted other sites, too — like CNN, Huffington Post, ESPN, Gawker, and The Washington Post. If you logged in to other sites using your Facebook account, something CNET says is a feature Facebook likes to highlight frequently, then you would be rerouted to the social networking site with an error message. This message read... "An error occurred. Please try again later." According to CNet, “The only way to stop it was to logout of Facebook. This shows how widespread Facebook Connect is and how easily one site can cause the Internet to come screeching to a halt.” Wired reports Facebook released a statement saying... “ For a short period of time, there was a bug that redirected people logging in with Facebook from third party sites to Facebook.com. The issue was quickly resolved, and Login with Facebook is now working as usual.” But a writer for Gizmodo questions if people understand how connected the Internet actually is, saying... “But the truth is, how many people even realize they're logged into Facebook? Or Google. Or Twitter. Or whatever. Everything connects on the Internet, even if you don't see it... Still, it's a little bit scary to think that one measly Like button can destroy the entire Internet, isn't it?” And GigaOM took this Facebook glitch as a time to reflect on how many sites take advantage of Facebook data to allow people to quickly create accounts on third-party sites. “Connecting users through Facebook can allow initially for a good deal of growth and reduced sign-in friction, but relying on a third-party platform like Facebook can certainly come with trade-offs as well.”
