Now, with that, let us get going. If we go to the Assets folder for Lesson 1, that is on the Part 1 folder. You will notice, I got an old version of our client’s website. Let us start by taking a look at that. I will just double click on the Old Site folder.
Now, inside here, we got a few elements that are going to be creating the website. Some of them are HTML pages, some are JPEGs and we will be seeing a lot more of these as we start creating them ourselves in the later lessons. But for right now, I would like to start on the front page of their website which is this one index.html.
Now, if I will just double click on that, that will open up inside of a browser and we can see what we got to work with. Now, our client is a custom car shop. They already offer a whole range of custom services including things like body work and paint jobs and custom interiors but I can tell right up with that by looking at their website that not only is it ugly, it does not really tell me anything about the company itself.
We got a pretty dated design and about the only thing it picks up is the “Alien” in the background. It does not have much visual appeal in the layout. I am certainly not enticed to read this big blob of text at the bottom, although I guess if I did, I might learn a few things about the company. We got broken links right here on the front page, that is always a bad sign. I guess that is why there is only been one visitor since ’97. We want to make sure that we have a website that we can keep up and current and this one obviously has not been updated in a long time.
Let us take a look at a couple other pages. I hope it gets better. I will click on pictures. Oops! Not so good to start with. We even got bad links in the website. If we try out the Fact page, we can see that we got pretty inconsistent layout and very bad web design. What little content there is on this page is all down below the scroll.
The Links page, we can see that has not been updated in a while and it is even inconsistent on the background. So, all in all, I would say a pretty bad website. I guess I should try at least one more. Well, they do have a guestbook forum but when is click the submit button, nothing happens. Now, obviously, we not only need to function but we also need it to look good. This is the first impression that all other customers are going to have.
Now, if we can provide a good website, we can provide that good first impression. I will bet you would make changes on this website as little bit tedious too with all the inconsistent colors, possibly than inconsistent thoughts used on the page. We even found out that the company has little in the way of print materials to go along with this. The company’s owner does not even carry business cards. We got a work cutout for us. We need to bring this client into the 20th century. We need to promote this company in a way that will impress all of its clients.
In addition to all of that, they are launching a new side business. They are going to make your car into a spaceship. They previously made cars for the movies and they sold some of these designs. So, the idea seems to have caught on. Now, this is one new service they would like to promote on their website in addition to all of the other services they already offer.
There are other things about the Alien Auto Company that we can promote. For instance, the business is kind of a family affair. Each member of the family has their own interesting background and experiences and we can use this to help build a personal bond between them and their clients.
Now, we do have a few things we can start with. Let us get out of this website and we will go back to our Assets folder. We are provided with a sketch of something that they would like to incorporate into the new design. Nice flaming wheel logo, incorporating all those hot cars that they have been working on.
Now, we are going to take this and build this into some branding and build our website design around it. We are also going to take all the other information they have given us about their com
