Equip an Outdoor Room
Derek Stearns: Despite our windy conditions—
Dean Marsico: Big tornado—
Derek Stearns: We are pushing on to finish the perfect outdoor retreat for Aimee and Garry Tupi who have their house full with 12 kids.
Dean Marsico: Now its time to get started on the room. Under the pergola we’ll create a comfortable sitting area with patterned furniture and sleek heat generating amenities. To the left of that, a cooking area with a special grill.
Derek Stearns: Just in case and it’s decorative.
Dean Marsico: Yup.
Derek Stearns: And so that way when you’re sitting over there you can be looking at something attractive other than the back part of a grill.
Dean Marsico: Correct.
Derek Stearns: That’s nice, I like it.
Dean Marsico: So let’s put together the grill.
Derek Stearns: Yeah.
Dean Marsico: Sounds good. It is the wind but you noticed my hair is not moving.
Paul: I know that’s amazing.
Dean Marsico: A little trick of a trade.
Derek Stearns: The grilling unit comes in pieces that are numbered. It’s just a matter of sliding them together and screwing them in. But it’s no ordinary grill. Its convection so food cooks perfectly even.
Dean Marsico: Aimee, you want a ribeye or you want a porterhouse?
Derek Stearns: This is our little fridge. You got to have a fridge if you’re grilling. Okay, Paul so this is our countertop. This is a granite overlay. It’s made with a thin layer of real granite backed by an aluminum honeycomb core which gives its strength that keeps it lightly. To hold the countertop in place, we put down a bit of silicon then we bring in the grill and attach everything.
Dean Marsico: I’m going to start priming the skirt board here. We’re using a water base primer that is slightly tinted it will help protect the wood from the harsh Minnesota web. Now all we need our some plants. All right what do we have in the track?
Kevin Breeggemann: It’s a variety, some nice colorful plants for Paul
Dean Marsico: Nice.
Kevin Breeggemann: This is for Dean.
Dean Marsico: Hey Aimee.
Aimee: Hi, how it’s going?
Dean Marsico: The plants are here.
Aimee: Good, I’m excited.
Dean Marsico: We have a lot of color.
Aimee: Beautiful.
Dean Marsico: This is Kevin. We decided the pretty flowers are for you. Derek’s over there painting the skirt board. We want to create an intimate living space. The plants will act like colorful walls in composing the room. A lot of color here Derek—lot of color, that’s what we’re looking for.
Kevin Breeggemann: It’s an outdoor room and just kind of defying the space a little bit so it just adds a little bit of touch to it.
Derek Stearns: Now its time to bring in some warmth and these lamps are no ordinary heating lamps. They are infrared and produce short wave heat which is absorbed by objects.
Dean Marsico: So the heat’s going to come down and everyone who’s sitting around here will absorb it.
Derek Stearns: And that means you stay warm even when it’s windy.
Dean Marsico: I like that and that’s all weatherproof itself, you can leave it out year around.
Derek Stearns: For the landscaping, we mix junipers, a plum tree and lots of colorful plants. Then we had a rustic paver entrance.
Dean Marsico: Now we’re going to bring in our gas lamps, right?
Male: Yup, gas lamps.
Dean Marsico: And this is all part of the fill, right. And you know what I like about this. Come here. Look at the little tank in there, that’s you little propane tank. No big tubes, screw things, little tank right in there. That’s what I like about it. And because it’s going to be outside, you might want to secure it and down here there are couples of anchors that we’re just going to screw right into our deck. Make sure these don’t tip.
Derek Stearns: In addition to the lights, we bring in a beautiful fire pit with crystal glass pieces in the center. Like any indoor room, keeping this outdoor room warm makes it all the more cozy. We fit the gas line under the rug and attach it to a tank hidden and a decorative end table.
Dean Marsico: The finishing touches include lighting above and all weather furniture wood patterns to match the outdoor scenery.
Hey Jessica this is the last table?
And plush pillows meant to take any weather.
Wow, this is a room baby.
Derek Stearns: And with a high winds picking up, its time to bring Garry out to see if he’s blown away.
Aimee: I have such a surprise for you. Okay, I’m going to turn you around and you have to tell me what you see. Do you love it?
Garry: Wow!
Aimee: Are you amazed. Look at how it’s transformed.
Dean Marsico: Come on, let’s check it out. Come on. It’s a gas propane fire. The tanks underneath this table thing here—
Derek Stearns: Look at this hidden over there but you can also use it as an end table.
Dean Marsico: It throws up heat but then we have this heat light here.
Garry: We had talked, you know what do you do and how do you it and what do you want it to look like and here it is. It’s all done. How did you guys get this done so quick?
Aimee: Come here, I got to show you this. This is so cool. You’ve got to see these lanterns. On switch, is that gorgeous or what? That is fun.
Garry: That is just rock and cool.
Aimee: This is for the chef in my life who loves to—
Garry: I can't believe all the landscaping.
Aimee: Do the cooking.
Derek Stearns: Nice huh?
Garry: I can't believe it.
Dean Marsico: I know, I know.
Garry: That is just something.
Derek Stearns: This isn’t your average grill man.
Garry: Wow.
Aimee: Check this out. It is exactly an outdoor kitchen. It’s a convection grill.
Garry: You guys got to stop back, I’m going to make a jalapeno burger.
Derek Stearns: Oh, we’ll come.
Garry: I will.
Aimee: Keep everything cooling down here in the refrigerator, take it away.
Garry: Wow.
Aimee: Very nice, very nice.
Garry: Wow.
Aimee: So what do you think about the romantic lighting? Is that something or what?
Garry: The romantic lighting.
Aimee: Yeah, isn’t that sweet.
Derek Stearns: That’s what you guys need.
Aimee: I know absolutely.
Derek Stearns: Come over here, it keeps her in bed.
Aimee: I can see it being a little retreat for Garry and I, it has the nice lighting in the evening and the heat.
Garry: Wow, that’s incredible.
Dean Marsico: Despite the wind, Garry and Aimee finally have a little peace and quiet in their new great escape grill. But with 12 kids, it may not last long.
Aimee: I’m so excited to see the family out there and actually using it. So I think we’ll get many years of enjoyment for sure out there.
