Energy Efficient Air-Conditioning Systems in Singapore
Narrator: With temperature of 30 degrees Celsius common all year around, humidity often exceeds 90%. To keep the office and factory workers cool, this means air conditioning systems that stay on every day of the year. And the air conditioning is the single largest user of energy in Singapore’s commercial buildings. That fact is meant a major business opportunity for one company.
Supersymmetry designs the world’s most energy efficient air conditioning systems based on exact calculations of waste and need in the offices and factories. It sets its store by saving energy. It's among those questioning the need for a new $5 billion power station that the government is planning. It will cost an estimated $1700.00 for every person living in the country at the time when Singapore already has an energy surface.
Lee Eng Lock: I can understand that the government has focused on economic growth and industry and tourism and so on doesn’t have much experience in this but they have young and bright bureaucrats. I'm sure these people will inform of what other people are doing better, smaller, faster, and cheaper than us. We should be competitive. We should have to look at that and perhaps review our position on spending so much public money with very little returns.
Yeo Cheow Tong: We have active text program. Companies which are able to use equipment which are more energy efficient get some types of benefits. They are able to ride off the investment faster and they get some savings than we. So we have active program of encouraging companies to be more efficient. But as the economy continuous to grow, we also have to make sure that we have enough energy for the future activities, industrial activities, commercial activities, the future economic activities. And it is inline with that that we continue to plan for future growth and future power are requirements.
Narrator: Supersymmetry’s energy efficient technology is being used here of Western Digital, a company that makes disk drives for personal computers. It needs an environment that’s absolutely clean for its manufacturing process. The new system works so well that Western Digital recently won an award as the world’s most efficient factory. Supersymmetry did the work enough and gets paid from the savings made when the clients’ energy bills go down. A client keeps half the money it saves. Suppersymmetry is paid the other half.
Bill Kunde: Energy efficient of energy consumption is nothing more than a part of our overhead. We've benchmarked ourselves and everybody is competing for the same amount of profit dollars in this marketplace. For us, we are right now with all our programs four times more efficient in our nearest competitor from the standpoint of consuming energy and the cost to build our products. You need to get one success under your bill to prove to the company you work for that energy efficiency really does have its paybacks.
