ERIC STROMER: Hey, I’m Eric Stromer, and this is another GMC Trade Secret.
All you have to do is watch the evening news to be convinced that disasters can happen anywhere. Whether it’s earthquakes, hurricanes, floods or manmade disasters, it’s important for everyone to be prepared for an emergency. I’m going to show you some of the essentials that you will need to be prepared.
Now, during a disaster, most public services will be unavailable. So be sure to make an emergency supply kit and keep it stored in an easily accessible location.
Your kit should include a three-day supply of food and three gallons of water per person per day. Also include a battery-powered or hand-cranked radio. Pack a flashlight with extra batteries. Put in a well-stocked first-aid kit. You should also have extra clothing, toiletries and bedding available, as well as any tools you may need.
You should also consider keeping prescription medications and important documents, such as insurance policies and identification, in a small, readily accessible safe in your house.
Make sure you get informed of the different types of emergencies that may affect your area, and learn the appropriate way to respond to them. Keep a smaller version of your emergency supply kit in your car. Now, this should include food, water, emergency blankets and first-aid supplies. Also in a disaster, basic services like gas stations will likely be out of commission, so always keep your gas tank at least half-filled.
Disasters are frightening situations, but having these emergency essentials will help you make it through.
