David Epstein: Hi! I am David Epstein. This is Growing Wisdom. It is early spring. The crocuses are up. May be your lawn has began to green up a little bit. And you are thinking, you don't want so much of crabgrass this year. And you want to control the crabgrass but you want to use an organic control. So how do you do that?
The great thing about corn gluten is that it's safe for pets, kids, you and even close to wetlands. The first step is you have got to clean up the yard. Get the leaves, the twigs, the dead grass, get that all out. Because don't want the corn gluten sitting up on the top of the leaves, it needs to touch the ground.
Once you have accomplished that you want to put some corn gluten in the spreader, and than just spread it around. There are couple of caveats. One is you don't want to use the corn gluten where you are going to plant grass in the sixty to ninety days. The corn gluten will actually stop the seed from coming up. So, I have a few bare patches that need to be seeded and we don't want to be putting the corn gluten there.
I would like to do it on a day which rain is predicted within 24 hours. It just helps to wash the corn gluten into the yard. And that literally is it, it will not only stop crab grass. But it's going to stop other annual weed seeds from germinating in your lawn. So there you have it, a very easy way to stop crabgrass and other types of weeds and you have done it using the organic control.
Come back every week for all of our tips, hints and helps at Growing Wisdom.
