That’s because in the Golden Triangle, they’ve found a new, living coffee pot. Seattle’s KING-5 has the scoop. “Elephant Poop Coffee. You heard right. Called ‘Black Ivory Coffee,’ the beans are fed to the elephants, they pass, and the beans are harvested and roasted.” While the idea of an elephant excreting someone’s morning cup of joe seems gross, it’s a simple matter of science. The Los Angeles Times reports, the anatomy and diet of an elephant make it the best way to enjoy a cup of java. “It can take between 15 and 30 hours for an elephant to digest coffee beans. That means they have plenty of time to stew alongside all the bananas, sugar cane and other stuff a pachyderm might have chomped on during the interval.” It’s actually not the first time people have used animals to spice up their coffee. But a blogger from LA Weekly says if you wanna make already-digested-coffee, you might as well do it in bulk. “Coffee mined from civet poop -- called kopi luwak (COH-PEE) (LEW-UH), another exorbitantly expensive variety -- is said to have a similar taste. But the elephant's massive stomach and slow digestive process is said to add even better flavor.” While tourists and locals clamor for the drink, you may wanna make sure you’ve got the funds to join this coffee-craze. WFLX in Palm Beach says this coffee ain’t cheap. “But if you wanna try this coffee you’re going to have to fork over a lot of cash. It’s fifty bucks a pop to be exact. A pop.” The makers of the drink say an added perk to the coffee is how it helps the worth of elephants in the area, which take an estimated one-thousand dollars-a-month to sustain.
