(Image source: The New York Times )     BY ZACH TOOMBS     Protesters continued their relentless demonstrations against Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi on Sunday, despite the leader’s decision one night earlier to withdraw a controversial decree that has placed his own actions above judicial review.   In anticipation of much larger protests planned for Tuesday, Egypt’s military went to work literally stacking giant concrete blocks around the presidential palace. Seven protesters have been killed and hundreds injured in clashes with authorities since Morsi’s controversial decree last month. [Video: Fox News ]   Morsi had intended his cancelled decree to be seen as a compromise. But he kept in place a referendum to approve a new constitution set for next week. [Image: Wikimedia Commons ]   Political opponents and demonstrators say that constitution is totally unacceptable, as it was drafted by Morsi’s own political allies in the Muslim Brotherhood. [Video: BBC ]   For The New York Times , David Kirkpatrick writes:   “The moves over the weekend offered little hope of fully resolving the standoff, in part because opposition leaders had ruled out — even before his concessions were announced — any rushed attempt at a compromise just days before the referendum.”   It’s important to remember Morsi took power just this summer after Egypt was ruled for 30 years by an unelected leader. But Al Jazeera spoke to Harvard’s Tarek Masoud, who says the opposition’s anger is not fueled specifically by Morsi’s actions.   MASOUD: “It’s not just opposition to the president. A lot of this opposition really is to the Muslim Brotherhood … Now, really, what we’re seeing is opposition to the way people feel that the Muslim Brotherhood has monopolized the transition period.”   The new constitution has drawn the ire of human rights advocates for its exclusion of assurances for free protest and government dissent. The public is set to vote on that new constitution Dec. 15.
