After pushing back election results Wednesday, Egypt’s electoral commission says they will announce a new president Sunday. Al Jazeera has the details.

 

“The supreme presidential election committee...said that it would announce the victor in a press conference on Sunday. That is in 24-hours time.”

 

And the BBC reports protesters are preparing for a longer stay.

 

“Supporters of the Muslim brotherhood in Egypt are continuing their protests in Tahrir square because of the delays and the numbers of protesters has steadily increased.”

 

France24 reports the Muslim brotherhood has said that if Mohamed Morsi doesn’t win and the presidency goes to former prime minister Ahmed Shafik they will continue protests — especially if they believe the election was rigged in Shafik’s favor.

 

“However they are adamant that their protests would be peaceful and repeatedly said they won’t resort to violence, but the situation is very tense here.”

 

Many Egyptians have backed Morsi with hopes of turning the country away from the Mubarak regime, while others are behind Shafiq hoping for restored order and stability. But a writer for the Huffington Post says there’s little hope with either victory.

 

“A Morsi victory will likely see the new civilian government fight for its authority against a military that has ensured that its powers persist past the transition. A Shafiq victory will be seen by large sections of the public as illegitimate, as he is perceived as the favored candidate of the military rulers that appointed the election commission.”

 

The announcement is expected to happen at 3pm in Egypt— 9am Eastern time in the U.S.
