President Mohamed Morsi’s decision to reinstate parliament was denied Tuesday by the Supreme Court. Al Jazeera has details on the aftermath.

 

“Protesters packed Tahrir Square in Cairo to support President Mohamed Morsi’s decision to reinstate parliament. Last month, the Supreme Court dissolved parliament citing legal issues.”

 

Voice of America reports the ruling came just hours after Egypt’s lower house of parliament reunited Tuesday against military and Supreme Court orders. And WGHP says the court’s decision has taken power away from Morsi after he said he would recall parliament.

 

“The court claims he has no legal grounds to do so and is the latest move in what seems to be a power struggle between Egypt’s president and its military rulers.”

 

And CNN says the decision has created a power struggle not only within Egypt’s government — but also among citizens.

 

“How can you cancel the ability of 30 million people?”

 

“The decision by the president has split the Egyptian street in an unprecedented manner and has caused an untimely crisis.”

 

The Los Angeles Times says the disagreement is built from decades of mistrust between the Muslim Brotherhood and the secular military — and both sides are in jeopardy over the continued mistrust.

 

“The nation's economy is faltering and many Egyptians are frustrated by the seemingly endless turmoil spawned by a revolution that brought down Mubarak 17 months ago but has yet to outline the ideals to restore the nation's confidence and regional stature.”

 

A writer for MSNBC says the power struggle contains another vital issue to be decided.

 

“...control of the body tasked with writing Egypt’s new constitution. The so-called constituent assembly will determine the balance of power between the executive and legislative branches of government, and the degree to which Islamic law is applied.”

 

Bloomberg Businessweek reports another parliamentary ballot will be held within 60 days of a newly approved constitution.
