How about a dress literally made from wine? Micro-be, a collaboration between Australian research team Bioalloy and artist Donna Franklin, has come up with a process for making skin tight dresses from the fermented bacteria created when red wine is mixed with acetobactor and turned into microbial cellulose, which is kind of similar to cotton. Bioalloy cofounder Gary Cass said: “We have now perfected a culturing technique that will allow the bacteria to form a three-dimensional garment that will be seamless. It can be formed to fit the wearer like a second skin." Not just wine, but beer and other alcohol can also be used in the fermentation process to create the fiber. Micro-be has also produced t-shirts and bathing suits from the fiber, and is hoping to alter the formula to make it more pliable and less fragile.

The applications of this innovation can extend beyond fashion as the research team is exploring its use in medical bandages as well.
