Double-Duty Home Remedies
Dr. Travis Stork: So, prevention is known not only for healthy eating tips, but what about home remedies Liz?
Liz Vaccariello: Yup, our readers love natural cures and they love home remedies. They also want to save time and money though, right? So we did a story that talked about things that are already in our house that we’ve used for one thing and might be use for another. Let’s talk about aloe vera for example.
Dr. Andrew P. Ordon: So it’s double duty.
Liz Vaccariello: Double-duty home remedies, right?
Dr. Andrew P. Ordon: I like that.
Liz Vaccariello: So aloe vera is great for sunburn after a day at the beach. We just lather some on our skin.
Dr. James M. Sears: Is it good for tongue burn (Laughter) -- I'm dying here.
Dr. Lisa Masterson: Eat some sugar.
Dr. James M. Sears: Sugar.
Dr. Lisa Masterson: Yeah.
Liz Vaccariello: It’s got vitamins B1, B2, B6.
Dr. James M. Sears: You can do that.
Liz Vaccariello: You are because the double-duty remedy is for canker sore. It’s for canker sore, the same things that reduce inflammation and control pain for a skin work on canker sores.
Dr. Travis Stork: Canker sores, I love it. Jim --
Dr. Lisa Masterson: You need some sugar.
Dr. Travis Stork: I thought they would give you a show where you worked the guinea pig and yet you can't resist.
Dr. James M. Sears: I know, talk to yourself.
Dr. James M. Sears: By the way, aloe tastes terrible.
Dr. Andrew P. Ordon: You can’t see it.
Dr. Travis Stork: Just a 411 for you guys.
Dr. Andrew P. Ordon: You can't see but I can. His nose is too -- we have another double-duty here, it's called the Wffervescent Antiacid tablets. You drop them in your water and you watch them fizz and a great way to take care of your heartburn. This Effervescent Antiacids contained aspirin salicylic acid. So actually, they are great topically. If you take some, mash them up like so and you actually mix it with a little bit of oatmeal and a little bit of water, you can form a paste, and this paste is wonderful to put on your skin. You can put it on a zit. You can put it on an insect bite, anything that’s inflamed or painful.
Dr. James M. Sears: Or your tongue.
Dr. Andrew P. Ordon: Jimbo let me mix this up for you.
Dr. James M. Sears: No, actually now I just need -- something to get that aloe taste out of my mouth.
Dr. Travis Stork: I'm sure we can find something. We have some Worcestershire sauce.
Dr. Andrew P. Ordon: Jimbo, put this on your tongue, the back of the spoon. It’s a cure.
Dr. James M. Sears: Oh, it’s kind of -- (Laughter) I like that.
Dr. Travis Stork: So Jimbo, you’ve got something in front of you and what’s interesting is that’s nasal spray, over the counter, right?
Dr. James M. Sears: It’s nasal spray -- medicated nasal spray for -- typically used for short term nasal congestion. But actually, you can also use it to stop a nasty nosebleed. I actually get nosebleeds quite a bit. And the active ingredient is called oxymetazoline. Basically, it constricts the blood vessels in your nose which is why it decongests you but that’s also the reason why it would stop a nosebleed.
Dr. Travis Stork: So let me ask you this. Is it theoretically possible that if you have a nosebleed -- because I use this in the ER, and then that hold pressure, but if you have an orgasm when you have a nosebleed and it constricts those blood vessels, would that help?
Dr. James M. Sears: Right. So if you don’t have nasal spray -- so if you have a nosebleed, go to the ER that Travis is working at and he will help you out. If you get a nosebleed, just do try to pinch it for five to ten minutes first, if that doesn’t work then you might try this and then it will stop.
Dr. Travis Stork: You pinch after spraying that in your nose.
Dr. James M. Sears: Give it a good pinch for another five to ten minutes.
Dr. Travis Stork: Fantastic.
Dr. Lisa Masterson: Something a lot of women may know about is Witch Hazel. It’s a natural astringent so it’s great for acne. It also closes down those vessels and kills bacteria. Again, another thing that women know about especially the mommies is that it's great for hemorrhoids again, because it constricts the vessels. So a lot of times, the mommies will get the With Hazel on the wipes in the hospital. And if you’re going to put it on hemorrhoids, you also want to follow up with some petroleum jelly and that helps a lot to keep it moist.
Dr. James M. Sears: You know what I need Travis is what you got next then.
Dr. Travis Stork: You know what? I was going to come to this. Mouthwash, this is an antiseptic that not only help prevents cavities, gingivitis and bad breath but believe it or not, it can help prevents smelly feet. Because anyone suffering from athlete’s foot out there? Guys, come over here. We’ve all been there, right?
What do you think you’re doing? I’ll tell you what. Believe it or not, you can soak a cotton swab.
Dr. James M. Sears: Stick it in there.
Dr. Travis Stork: With mouthwash and the alcohol in it is an antifungal, and it keeps Jim’s toes nice and --
Dr. James M. Sears: Is it smelling better for you there Lisa?
Dr. Andrew P. Ordon: I can smell that.
Dr. James M. Sears: Actually, you could keep -- pour in a little cup of that for me.
Dr. Lisa Masterson: You got some funky feet on there men. You might want to do something on a regular basis.
Dr. Travis Stork: Thank you. Jim, we hope you’re feeling better.
