Hello! I am Colleen Driscoll. I am the owner of a childproofing company called Baby's Home Safe Home. Today, we are talking about childproofing the kitchen. Now, we are going to talk about door safety.

It's important to deny access to dangerous areas of your home, and sometimes we use door-locks to do that. You may have a round doorknob is some locations, or perhaps a lever doorknob. Lever doorknobs are very easy for children to get into. This is an example of an doorknob cover. We use these with round doorknob covers. They are designed to slow children down. An adult will open the door by pressing on the pads, and then grabbing the doorknob itself.

These can be used on bathroom doors, or possibly on a pantry door if you have a round doorknob. We like to use the flip lock when we have lever doorknobs on a panty door. This a an example of a flip lock. This is a great lock to use on some pantry doors. Right now it's in the lock position. If a child just come over and try to open the lever doorknob, and they can't get in. It's very easy to unlock.

This one is installed at this height because of the siblings. You may install it higher. There are other examples of door locks that we will use with other doors. Perhaps, you have a basement door in your kitchen. We will use the top door latch for a basement door. One great feature about the top door latch is that it will work from both sides of the door, so that we don't lock your family down the basement. These are great locks to use with lever doorknobs.

Some kitchens have swing doors. You may need to consider adding some type of lock perhaps a surface bolt to lock the swing door. Often they are located between the kitchen and the dining room. We want to make sure that children don't pinch their fingers in it. If you don't lock it you may want to consider locking in the open position or using a finger pinch guard. A finger pinch guard can be clamped to the door to prevent finger pinching. Other types of doors that you might in your kitchen or other rooms of your house include bifold doors and sliding doors. This is an example of a bifold door lock.

One thing about bifold doors is it's very easy for children to pinch their fingers. So even if you are trying to deny access to the content inside the closet, you also want to make sure your children don't pinch their fingers.

Sometimes children will lock themselves in the bathroom or another room of their house. So it's important for you to have interior door keys. Sometimes you can use a screwdriver or even a paperclip. You just want to practice and make sure that you are ahead of your child. We want to make sure that you know how to get in just in case there is emergency before the emergency happens. This is an example of a sliding door lock. These can be used on exterior doors or interior sliding doors.

The bracket is lowered and flat when it's in the unlocked position. To lock it move it to the out position. Since we are talking about door safety, it's also important that I talk about some tips for window blind safety and drapery cords.

This is a mini example of a mini blind cord. Newer mini blinds will two separate tassels. It's very important that you do not tie a knot in your tassels or cords to create a loop. The loop is very dangerous.

We recommend using pleats to wrap up blind cords. You also can consider using cordless products such as cordless draperies or cordless blinds. I recommend that you visit the Window Covering Safety Council website for more information on window blind safety.

Sometimes drapery cords will also have loops. Sometimes they may not be able to be cut. So we will use a device called the tie-down device that will anchor that loop. This is one example. There are also various other types that you could use. And you can also order some of these from the Window Covering Safety Council for free. It's important for you to check all exit or exterior doors in your home. Sometimes toddlers will escape out the duct or the front door. So check all your doors, whether it's in the kitchen or another area of your home.

Generally, we want to place locks up high so children cannot reach them. But please consider fire exit in the placement of the locks. We want you to consider other family members and make sure they can escape if there is a fire.

You may need to consult a locksmith for assistance with this. A firm handle in the sliding glass door of your deck is probably not going to work. Children will quickly find that and they can pull it out.

Many locks on doors are low, and as your child grows and develops they can start to reach them, and that is one reason why we want you to reevaluate all your doors and consider adding higher door locks.

Now that I have shared some tips on door safety, I would like to talk about TV and furniture safety.
