Dr. Emile R. Mohlar: Well, PAD has been known for quite a while, doctors have understood it, known it. What's new about the condition is we are learning is relationship with the other parts of the body the other circulatory system and also we are learning more about how to treat it.
Phylicia Rashad: Over a million people in this country alone are affected by PAD and of that number two-thirds are completely unaware of the condition itself. I'd never heard of it. When people have -- especially if they sit down or lie down for a while and it goes away, the first thought is, okay well maybe I just overdid it or maybe I was just tired and maybe I sat wrong or maybe you did or maybe you didn't.
Dr. Emile R. Mohlar: If you are an older individual namely greater than age 50 year or with the history diabetes or smoking or greater than age 70 and you have discomfort walking around, you shouldn't just ignore it and think it's old age because it might be a block to artery, which needs to be treated. Patients with PAD usually experience leg discomfort manifests as a cramping sensation with exercise. It doesn't usually occur with rest, but some patients actually can describe heaviness or leg fatigue rather than the cramping sensation, but unfortunately others even don't even know they have the problem. They don't have much discomfort at all in the lower extremities, so they would have to be screened by their doctor for this condition.
Phylicia Rashad: It should be that. And that is really my goal that it should become the regular part of a doctor's visit. It just be routine and that for me will take care of a lot. That will take care of a whole lot.
Dr. Emile R. Mohlar: At this point the general public has very little knowledge about this condition. A recent article published in General Circulation indicates that only one in four people ever heard of PAD and of those people have heard about it know very little about it, so really hoping to raise awareness for PAD through this campaign.
