Discover Hells Canyon in Idaho
Male: Since 1919, residence living along the remote reaches of the Snake River and Hell’s Canyon have looked forward to a weekly treat, the mail boat.
Linda Mink: The mail boat is in rock just sometimes they’re life savers literally that it’s kind of nice to have something that occurs very regularly that you know that’s going to here and the mail boat is one of the main reasons that some of us can even live down here because otherwise you’ll be pretty isolated.
Male: Beamers Hell’s Canyon tours had had the mail contract for several decades and also take passengers along for the two day trip. An added trip from November to February still had vision. On this particular day, since it’s early in the season vision started at Heller bar by the ride.
Sport fishing in Idaho is an important economic resource generating over 400 million in revenue. There are over 400,000 licensed—in the state each year. After lunch, everyone switches boats to the mail boat to begin the day’s 30-mile journey at Beamer’s—envelop with the mail.
Rob Baker: The history of Hell’s Canyon on the Snake River involves a lot of sternwheelers and a lot of our history books, especially at Luna House Museum, some of the rural local places around the valley will have big creatures on wall. They were 125 feet long and 40 feet wide and they ran up the river about another 25 miles from here to get to a mining town called Eureka. Here just about an edge to bring an sternwheeler paddle mode up to the—, it’s a lot of work. About 4 ½ inch stern to get—
These days I’m kind of spoiled because some of the older guys we’re back in the 40s so this will look four or five trip for me it’s an overnight. But the equipment nowadays is a lot more advance of course and back into the 0343 of people living in the Canyon and that involve a lot of 0348, there were a lot of cheap farming. A lot of 0351 that had to be drive in and the mailboat was ready to get anything so that was a real work at boat. Some will 0357four, five guys 0359- to transfer 0401 so but times 0403 can change and now we’re basically the mail is it, goes 0409 people 0409 they need but the 0411 treated mailboat 0412 and that’s been since 1990.
Joni Bullock: We are 0436 from about Thanksgiving until the end of March. So for four months they bring our milk and eggs and that’s the only grocery that we get, we just stock up in November and don’t go out again until April. We have a quiet lifestyle yet we have satellite TV and satellite phone and even Internet so we’re not out of touch with the world but we have out privacy and solitude. And the library is really good for us, we have a friend who picks up all the library books that we order over the internet and takes them to —and then the mail boat brings them up to us and we’re done, we send them back on the mail boat so it works out great that we can get resources and we can use material off the internet for home schooling too.
Male: Rooms at—are warm and comfortable and the dining lodge, equally so. This particular night—. It’s not unusual for deer to wonder through the middle of camp.
Rob: You’re about as far out in the middle of nowhere as you can be but here at—we stay every week in the mail boat, we have all amenities of being somewhere that’s not so much out. We’ve always got a referred to it as an oasis in the middle of Canyon because the middle of summer where things are dry and it’s really warm, this is a one green spot in a 100 miles stretch of the river where people get away from the heat and relax a little bit.
