Discover Gillette Castle Connecticut
The two oldest continuously operating ferries in the United States are here on the Connecticut River. The Rocky Hill Glastonbury cruising on Connecticut Route 160 has been on operations since 1655. Downstream a few miles, the Chester Hadlyme Ferry. It’s the second oldest in the country and a little bit larger. On the block overlooking the ferry, a unique Connecticut treasure Gillette Castle. William Gillette was an actor who first gave to the world a visual impression of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s character, Sherlock Holmes. His retirement home, the castle is now a state park and museum. Public tours are offered by knowledgeable guides.
Gillette designed the home with intricating complicated wood carving. Each of the mansions doors and windows is unique. He fashioned elaborate yet functional wooden lock systems for all the doors and windows. His passion for rare roads carried through in his design. Each light switch is fashioned after rare road switch of one kind or another. The house is on 122 acres of landscape grounds of what beautifully arranged flower gardens.
