Welcome to the TDMD Daily Tip Podcast. My name is Marcelo Lewin, the digital media dude. This week’s tip is for final cut pro and color correction, specifically how to color correct quickly using the gang function. Let me show you what I mean.
Okay, so here we are in final cut pro and as you can see, I have my video scopes opened—ready to do some color correction. I have a variety of clips here that I just dropped in the time line. I really did not do any editing on them, but I just placed them just to show you how I would normally would color correct.
So for example, here is a video that I want to go ahead and color correct. I will go to my effects. I will at look at my three-way color corrector, which is under color correction. I would drop it in here. I will double click it, and then go to my viewer and start doing my correction.
So, for example I am just going to do anything right now just so you can see. There you go, that is beautiful. There you go. I want that really red, hellish kind of look and feel for this wedding. Of course, that is a joke, but that is an example. So, there is my color correction, I would then probably go grab my actual color corrector that I just created, put it under my favorites and then go to my next one, double click. I would go ahead, drag it into in, and then make any other corrections to adjust this one if I wanted to. That is all great, but easy. You can tell there is a lot of double clicking out to do.
The really, the best way to do it, I am going ahead in command Z or undo everything is to set your sync to open. And what open will do, and it does not matter if you do it in the viewer or in the canvas, what open will do is as you move from clip to clip, it will open up the clip in the viewer ready for you to drop any filters you want.
So in this example, I am going to drop the color corrector I created previously. I am going to go to my visual tab. I am going to readjust, there you go. That is extremely beautiful color adjustment for blank person.
Let us assume that that is really what I wanted to do. So, now I have color corrected this clip. I can move on to my next one and you see it opens it up, but there is no video filter. So if I go to my previous one and I say, I am going to my visual, and I say copy forward one, and then go to my next one, it will automatically put the color corrector with the adjustments that I wanted to the next clip.
From here, I can make any further adjustments. I need a copy it to the next clip or for example if I say the next clip really does not need it, but the one after that clip needs it, I can say copy filter to two by clicking that button. And then if I go to my next one, there is no color corrector, but the one after has a color corrector.
The other neat thing that I can do is for example on this video, I could make further changes and I can say, okay, this is really what I want it t look like. When I go to the video that already has a color corrector, I can look at the previous and I can say I really want the filter that is in the clip two back. So, when I clicked on that, automatically, there is the new color from the one back. Now back here I can say, “You know what drop that on my next clip.” There is my next clip, and it is so beautiful.
So, that is how you can quickly move around a variety of clips, have them open up automatically in the viewer and then copying either from previous clips or copying two clips forward you color corrector.
I hope this helps you out in your color correction.
