Are generic drugs as effective and as safe as their brand-name counterparts?
Dr. Deborah Dapore: The FDA requires generics to be bio-equivalent to the brand name products meaning that it has to have the same active ingredient, has to absorb the same way in the body, has to eliminate the same way in the body, and has to work the same way in the body, so the AB generics that are on the market today brought the FDA is proved are equivalent to the brand name product.
But now you can’t bring them to the market, the FDA won’t approve the generics to come out on the market unless they go through a rigorous study to make sure that they are the exact same product as the brand. Now you might have differences in the inactive ingredients and products, the lactose whatever they are using as fillers and that may react in somebody’s metabolism differently, but in my experience most people don’t have a better problem taking a bit the generic drug.
Now until a drug loses its patent, they are not available. We still get people let us say it doesn’t work as well. They think that it’s not going to work as well, and so they tell themselves it’s not going to work as well, so it doesn’t work as well, but it really does. I mean, I don’t have any product. I haven’t any problems with anybody that got a generic bring it back and say it didn’t work.
