Speaker: Depression effects unfortunately about 20% of all women and 10% of all men in America. So how can massage help. Message makes you feel good, comfortable, and protected. It is one of the most direct ways of telling somebody I am there for you. Make sure to stay away from techniques that are poky or harsh; stick to fluid motion and solid but not too intense contact. Just make sure it is comfortable for the recipient.
Some people swear by self message, although I have made the experience that people suffering from depression usually have a hard time to motivate themselves to do it. They sometimes need to be engaged by somebody else. So how does message influence depression? The skin and the brain have a close connection and massage can, therefore, bridge the gap between the body and the mind and it also opens up the possibility to influence our emotional state and mood.
Message helps to release mood enhancing by chemicals within the body, induces relaxation, reduces muscle tension, and pain, leads to lower stress hormone level and harmonizes the brain activity and the breathing. It also helps to improve sleeping patterns. Aroma oils like Lavender, Rosemary, Peppermint, and Lemon can be a great asset if either mix with plain message oil or are used in aromatherapy diffuser. Music has also shown to harmonize brain activity and of course, regular exercise has proven to improve symptoms of depression. Recent research has also shown that actually giving a message can help with symptoms of depression.
Mood has to do with accomplishment making somebody else feel good or just with the close physical connection to somebody else in a time, we feel alienated. In my experience, message is very rewarding for both parties. Make sure that you reach out for professional medical assistance if you suffer from symptoms of depression and find out from your doctor if massage is good for your specific condition.
