Dave Wiens Preparing for the 2009 Leadville Trail 100
My preparation this year has been somewhat different. The first four I guess I prepared for just by riding a lot and that’s all I really needed. Then for 2007, when initially Lance said he’s going to be at the race that pulled Floyd into the race and then Lance had a schedule in conflict. But it was still Floyd. I went ahead after the firecracker 50 on July 4, I went back to my old training logs and mapped out a fairly, detailed training plan and try to execute the best I could. And so, that was much different than last year with Lance, I did the same thing. Only I took that basic plan. I just soothed it out, there’s a little bit rough in some places.
I was still working at that time, so I didn’t have some of the weekends I was working I supposed to be and I will train. So I took that and refined it and that worked really well. But for this year, I did trans up stage race in Europe. And that was the last week of the tour was the week in the trans up. It’s an eight-day Stage Race, there were only seven races at this time but, it was an amazing experience but the race just climbs and climbs and climbs. We climbed over 50,000 feet in the seven races that we did and we never race for more than four and a half hours. I think the longest day was four and a half hours and we climbed 11,000 vertical feet.
So I’ve never done a block of any kind of training on racing that was that intensive as far as the vertical. And also the pace, I was at my limit to start to finish in those races so this year, I was random but quality training up to the firecracker, race in the firecracker. And then it was off to trans up. And these three weeks since trans up I was just trying to recover, get back on the clock and now I'm that sort of zone of I’m not really sure how I feel. I feel good some days. I don’t feel as good other days but that’s typical for me even last year when I was doing the training without the training without the trans up. So, would you see how it ends up coming out but at this point I'm feeling strong and confident and would you see on Saturday.
