Image Source: NASA BY MADISON MACK ANCHOR ZACH TOOMBS NASA’s Curiosity rover will deliver a special message to those party hardying in Times Square this New Year’s Eve. On Monday evening the rover tweeted. “Will you be in @TimesSquareNYC for New Year's Eve? Look for a special message from Mars on the giant Toshiba screens.”   But If you won’t be in New York don’t worry, NASA will be posting the message online as well. NASA also released a new self-portrait of the rover, arguably the most beautiful yet. And in the upper right hand corner you can see Mount Sharp, Curiosity’s final destination.   The portrait is actually a composite of more than 50 smaller images taken over the course of a day by Curiosity’s Mars Hand Lens Imager which sits on the end of a robotic arm. NASA doesn’t just produce these portraits to dazzle the eyes of earthlings. NPR reports: “Self-portraits like this one document the state of the rover and allow mission engineers to track changes over time, such as dust accumulation and wheelwear.” Curiosity will be spending the next month in its current location in the Gale Crater hunting for the what NASA calls the “perfect”rock to to take samples from. Then in February...   “Curiosity will head for Mount Sharp to figure out whether this part of Mars ever had the conditions to support life. ... Since scientists want a close look at what it finds along the way, it’ll turn into a 9-month odyssey.”
