Jennifer Matthews: Danny Rawson and Doug Bowerman have worked together for 16 years. Last year, their relationship went beyond just co-workers.

Doug Bowerman: I still think I owe Danny a debt of gratitude.

Jennifer Matthews: At 37-years old, Doug's heart stopped.

Doug Bowerman: I just really remember coming to work that morning.

Jennifer Matthews: When Doug hit the ground, Danny jumped to his rescue.

Danny Rawson: It was obvious that he was in trouble. So, I checked for a heartbeat.

Jennifer Matthews: Fifteen minutes later, the ambulance arrived. Doug was brought to this emergency room where doctors used a new treatment on him.

James Grotta: Often times we can resuscitate these patients but they never wake up or if they wake up, they wake up with a lot of memory impairment and intellectual impairment.

Jennifer Matthews: Dr. James Grotta says the goal of the treatment is to cool the brain. This machine is like a refrigerator for the body. Using a catheter, ice-cold water is circulated through the veins. The body temperature is brought down to 91 degrees in just two hours.

James Grotta: If you stop the blood flow to the brain and the brain is cooled, the damage is less.

Doug Bowerman: I think the research that Dr. Grotta did had a very big impact on me returning back to normal.

Jennifer Matthews: Both of Doug's parents died from heart failure, his father at the age of 43. Doug knows he's alive today, thanks to the treatment and Danny.

Doug Bowerman: I just thank God that he was there. He's kind of like an angel looking over my shoulder.
