Image Source: US Coast Guard BY KERRY LEARY ANCHOR MEGAN MURPHY Rough conditions continue for a fourth day aboard the stranded Carnival Cruise ship floating in the Gulf of Mexico. An engine fire left it stranded Sunday. But conflicting reports are leaving those watching from land scratching their heads. ABC spoke with a man whose wife is on board. “If you can imagine 4,000 people running to these single bathrooms, I mean, it’s horrible ... all you hear on these phone calls is crying, and talking about I’m going to die, I’m gonna die.” The engine fire happened Sunday morning, stopping propulsion and the majority of electricity on board. Carnival’s CEO spoke for the first time about the incident Tuesday night. WLUK has his comments, and words from a passenger on board. CEO GERRY CAHILL: “There is running water. And there’s a good number of bathrooms that do work.” PASSENGER ANN BARLOW: “There’s sewage. Raw sewage. Pretty bad. When you walk in the hallway you have to cover your face.” Yep -- pretty different takes on what’s happening. Some of the more than 4,000 passengers report there are lines for hours to get food and people are sleeping in tents on the deck. NBC spoke with another woman on board who notes: “The worst part is the bathrooms. There’s no water. You can’t really flush so everyone’s going in little plastic baggies and putting it outside their rooms.” The ship is also having difficulty making it back to land. On Monday night, two tug boats started pulling it -- but because the Triumph is bigger than the Titanic, it’s only moving at about seven miles per hour. The Mobile Press-Register explains how its course has changed. “The ship was originally supposed to go to Progreso, Mexico, but officials changed their minds after the ship drifted 90 miles north of its original position, making a move toward Mobile more feasible.” Carnival is offering all passengers a full refund for their voyage, including travel expenses and all onboard purchases. They will also give passengers a future credit cruise equal to what they paid for this trip. Carnival has booked hotel rooms and flights home for passengers when they arrive in Mobile, Alabama on Thursday.
