KXLH reports. “Sir Ranulph Fiennes will lead a team aiming to complete the first ever winter crossing of Antarctica on foot. A grueling expedition known as "the coldest journey" that's just getting underway and won't be complete for over a year, surviving temperatures that average 60-below.” The six-member team will cross 4,000 kilometers on foot... We’re cold just thinking about Antarctica. MSNBC has more about the 68-year-old Fiennes. “He has survived a literal heart attack on the slope of Mount Everest and he once had such a bad case of frostbite he amputated the ends of his own fingers with a microsaw.” The group set out Monday for Capetown, South Africa in preparation for the expedition. But Mother Nature Network reports , there is already a complication. “Raising the bar on what would already be a life-threatening journey is the U.K. Government's insistence that the six-person team bring along two 20-tonne tractors to support the crossing. The tractors make it less likely the government will be called upon in the event of a rescue operation.” If everything goes according to plan, the exploration should be completed around September 21, but they’ll have to wait until January 2014 to head back to Britain because that’s the soonest a polar vessel will be able to reach them... thanks to the cold temperatures. Prince Charles wished the team, "God speed and every possible good fortune in this wonderful, dotty adventure” on the Coldest Journey’s official website.
