Amy E: Hello we are here at Zip Zap Hair in San Francisco, and this is Mike and he is the owner of the Salon. He is going to be doing Jay's hair. And Jay is a graphic designer here in Sans Francisco and he wants like a bit more edgier haircut right.
Mike: Yeah.
Amy E: So what are we going to do to make him look fabulous?
Mike: Well, first we are going to look at his hair again, we see a bit cowlick here.
Amy E: A cowlick.
Mike: Yeah, like a cow licked him or something like that. See that, yeah so it's that big part right there.
Amy E: Moo.
Mike: So, we know this would stick up, even if we don't want it to, it probably will. So, let's just go with it, we'll make that stick up, get rough and choppy on top, similar to the last model. Well, we see he has got a lot of volume too here, so I am thinking he is going more straight up on the sides here.
Amy E: And you are going to work with his natural head, that he not pulling on.
Mike: Yeah.
Amy E: Brilliant.
Mike: And the back of course, we always want to look at the back before we start and look down. So he has got kind of a crazy neckline, we can blend that out, take care that. These are the detachable clippers.
Amy E: Detachable
Mike: You see the blades come off just like this. And these are similar to the plastic attachments, that you put on to the adjustable clippers. So, what we are going to do is just come up and out, just like you would with the plastic attachment clippers. But these have more teeth, which makes it a smoother cut. We have -- the plastic ones have four or six teeth maybe.
Amy E: How many do these ones have?
Mike: 18.
Amy E: 18.
Mike: So, when you are going through with the plastic ones, you are going to leave some hair. There is just nowhere around, and these give a nice clean cut. So again, we are going to comb all the hair down, starting in the center. Now, I am pushing against his neck here, but as I come up I am going to be pulling out. We are going to take big pieces of hair off.
Amy E: Now why do you pull out when you come up?
Mike: So, we can leave the hair up here longer. So, this is long, short, and shortest, and this is about this is the number four here. So, it's the longest one, because we see we are coming up and out.
Amy E: And we are getting all of it.
Mike: Yeah and it just takes a second. It's really quick.
Amy E: And how many swipes would you have to do with the full tooth.
Mike: I might go over maybe 10 times, and it still never looks right.
Amy E: Oh! How annoying. So, then you have go shorter and shorter just to make a balance like heart on Valentine's day and I try to make it equal. Then you have got no hair left. You are like oh! There is no love, there is no love. Okay. So, here you are allowing the ear.
Mike: Yeah, I am holding the ear down, I am going straight up and out the same way and then here I might just go in a little bit of an angle, just make sure you don't go too far in to that.
Amy E: Why?
Mike: Same thing here, because if we try and leave that long. So, then we have long to short to shortest. And then again, staying in the same spot and we'll spin the client around.
Amy E: Hello.
Mike: Take some of the top hair after the side hair. Comb everything down, that's important to pull everything down, and go up and out. Do you see how much hair it takes off in such a short time.
Amy E: If you don't comb it first what will happen?
Mike: Well, when you don't comb it first that's a good question, when you don't comb it first that hair could be let's say --
Amy E: A bit messy.
Mike: Yeah, so what you are doing, you are catching it all.
Amy E: Oh! He didn't comb it, oh! What happened.
Mike: So, then when you do comb it down you are going to have long spots, short spots and you don't want to do that.
Amy E: Yeah. So, combing is important to make it all the same length.
Mike: Yup and you comb it down and go against it. Comb it down go against it. Because you want to comb it all down, so then you can cut it off. So, what I am doing here is the clipper-over-comb technique, which I have demonstrated before. So, all we are doing is just doing a rough length. I am just catching that really long hair, this is the short hair, this is really long right here. So, I am just going take that and blend it into a shorter hair. And now what I am doing is, doing a rough kind of length right now. I am not going to really fine tune it yet.
So, here we go. We have got, this is just the rough length on the sides. So, we are seeing what we have got, we were working with it here.
Amy E: Yeah.
Mike: So, it's just still too long around the ears into the sides. So, what's nice about these is that you can change the blades. So, I am taking it off this one.
Amy E: It's so easy. You have to push a button?
Mike: No. I just pulled them right off and this is a three-and-a-half blade.
Amy E: They never fall off?
Mike: No, they don't fall off. You saw the one, it was running like that.
