Hi! I'm Peter Awando from Water-Flow Gutter Solutions and today I'm going to be showing you how to clean gutters. In this segment, I'm going to show you how to clean the downspout yourself, how to check whether it's clogged, then clean it. As you can see, the area around the downspout is already very clean, and you don't have to worry about that.
So what you're going to do first is have like a stone pebble. This is very easy. When you're on the ground, just come up with it and put in your pocket. This is very good because you want to use it to test the downspout, so what you're going to do, just take your stone and drop it in the downspout, and listen for it, because what you want to listen to is if the stone drops all the way to the bottom. Chances are, it will, if it does, it means it's clear. But when you drop it and you don't hear it going all the way down, it means you have a clogged downspout.
So one of the first things you're going to do is gently tap on the downspout, you want to tap on it to see if anything falls all the way down again, because this stone is going to push them down. After a few seconds of tapping, it means your downspout is clogged because you can still see some stuff in there.
So what you're going to do is have your drill handy. Right here, I have my drill. Another thing I forget to mention to you, when you come up, you want to have your drill not too far away from you, because you don't want to stretch and try and get it, so just have it close by to you. So with your drill, what you're going to do, just step down the ladder a little bit and you're going to remove the fast screw on top.
When you do that, be careful to keep this screw, you don't want to drop it and lose it, because you might lose it and you don't have the same color that you have down here. That's the fast screw. Then lean down a little bit and get the other one out, I have it right here. Keep that safe too, put your drill back on the ground, you want to move your bucket close to you too, so you don't have to stretch again to get it. Then gently dismantle the downspout, take the piece, as we can see on this one, it's fully clogged, so that means we actually have to take it down to cleaning.
So on your bucket, simply pour it and tap it and everything that's in there, is going to come out. Flip it over the other side. When you feel it's clear, you can just look at it. Another easy way, you can gave another stone, just drop it in while it is in the bucket, go long in and then lets you know that this is clear.
All you've got to do is now go back down, now you want to just put it back, make sure it's tight, get your drill, get your screws back, and put it back in. It's very easy and very gently, and your downspout shall be clean.
As a rule of thumb, what I do myself is always have an extra stone, like after I've done everything I put it back in, just take it again and throw it in and right now you can hear it go all the way down. And that lets you know that your downspout and your outlet is clean, you don't have to worry about that.
So that's how you clean a downspout and that's how you dismantle it, just to make sure everything is clean. In the next segment, I'm going to show you how to clean the rest of the gutter section by section. Thank you!
