Erik: How has coming from a family of musicians affected how you view creating products?

Chris: In the musical world in schools, you’ll see that there are two types of proficient musical students. There are those who are extremely technical and practice hours and hours and hours and play every single note correct like they hit every single note, and it’s the right duration, it’s the right accent, it’s the right bow movement, and it’s got everything about it right. It’s perfection. And those students get a lot of attention because people are – it’s like ‘wow, that’s amazing.’ They’re playing that so fast or so perfect without a single flaw or mistake, or, you know, hesitation, or stumble. But then, you know, very earlier on, we found that the other type of musician is the one who plays with more emotion, the one who kind of goes off the path of the music, the score, to express something interesting and new. The product for me, it’s definitely not about perfection or getting every single thing right, it’s really about the relationship and what people have with the product, so if it can evoke emotions or emotional responses and make people happy, or make people pay attention, or, you know, achieve some kind of human goals and a human reaction, that’s what I’m interested in. So I think of my work in the coding to be more of that emotional side and trying to get people to do – understand something or do something and less about like perfection and being on time, or on budget, or things like that.
