lived in Tucson, Arizona after leaving China in 1990. In the mid to late 80's Fang spoke out against the Communist Party and declared that science should not be determined by Marxist theory. These and other comments challenging the Chinese government made him a target of the 1989 army led crackdown on pro-democracy activists.
