A reported truce has — at least temporarily — brought an end to the recent outbreak of violence between Israeli and Palestinian militant groups in Gaza. HLN explains.


“After four days of Palestinian rocket attacks and Israeli military airstrikes, Egypt claims to have brokered the ceasefire agreement.”


France24 has some of the terms of the ceasefire.


“The key condition for the agreement on the Palestinian side: that its militants should no longer be targeted. Israel has confirmed reaching an understanding on a truce.”


As of Tuesday afternoon, no official statement on the truce had been issued by officials in either Israel or Gaza. CNN reports, the two sides might have drastically different interpretations of the agreement.


“Israel denied Tuesday that it had agreed to stop the practice of targeted killings in Gaza arguing that it remained a legitimate tool to fight terrorism.”


While the latest outbreak of violence followed the familiar pattern of so many conflicts before it, The New York Times explains there were some differences this time.


“...even at the height of the fighting there was no sign that either Israel or Hamas … wanted an all-out confrontation and the prospects of an imminent showdown … seemed unlikely. Some of the old rules of the conflict have changed since then, and new domestic and regional factors have emerged.”


The Israeli military said several rockets and mortars were fired into Israel after the agreement went into effect. But Fox News explains, another new factor in the conflict — Israel’s missile defense system — means those rockets now pose much less of a threat.


“Almost 90 percent of those rockets have been shot down by Israel’s new missile shield called Iron Dome. … As this missile advances its sophistication, it may provide another layer of security against foreign attacks.”


At least eight Israelis were injured in the rocket attacks, and 24 Palestinians were killed in the Israeli air strikes, with dozens injured.
