(Image Source: CNN ) BY KERRY LEARY ANCHOR MEGAN MURPHY It’s a worst nightmare for some people... a cruise ship in the Gulf of Mexico is dead in the water after a weekend engine fire some 150 miles from land with more than 4,000 passengers and crew on board. “ The cruise line says an engine fire caused the Carnival Triumph to lose propulsion and it is now on emergency backup power. The U.S. Coast Guard is expected to arrive sometime this morning and help tow that cruise ship back to Progresso, Mexico.” Although the fire was quickly extinguished and no injuries were reported, the ship is without propulsion and is running on generators. ABC News describes the ship as “a one hundred thousand-ton cork bobbing in the water.” There are conflicting reports about the status of the travelers on the ship. “She said that there’s no running water, they just got food there to them about tonight, and there’s no power whatsoever other than the emergency flasher lights that are on.” The man interviewed by ABC News said his wife was hysterical when she spoke with him. But CNN reports: “[A Carnival representative] said that passengers were never without electricity, thanks to emergency generators, and have ample food and water on board. Even more food and beverages were being transferred Sunday night onto the Triumph from one of its sister ships, the Carnival Elation, which was on scene.” The Daily Mail says Carnival Cruise Line is having its most difficult year in the history of the company. “In January last year, the Costa Concordia, a 114,500 tonne luxury cruise ship operated by the Carnival-owned Costa Cruises, ran aground and sank off the Tuscan island of Giglio in Italy, killing 32 people … The company lost £200 million in full-year revenues compared to 2011 and although bookings for 2013 were at the same capacity as previous years, the company has been forced to lower their prices.” After the ship docks in Mexico, passengers will then be flown back to the United States. Carnival said all passengers would receive a refund and ‘cruise credit equal to the amount paid for this voyage.’ The next two voyages for the ship have been cancelled.
