Governor John Hickenlooper signed an executive order adding the voter-approved change to the state’s constitution, writing: “Voters were loud and clear on Election Day…” He added, the state would begin working immediately to implement the amendment. Coloradans over the age of 21 can now legally possess up to an ounce of cannabis or up to six plants. It is, however, still illegal to consume it in public — and to buy or sell pot — though the state is working on figuring that part out. Governor Hickenlooper also established a 24-member task force that will begin setting up a framework for the legal sale and purchase of pot and also help the state navigate federal laws. It’s still unclear how the federal government intends to handle marijuana legalization. Just last Wednesday right before legalization went into effect in Washington, the U.S. District Attorney’s Office issued a statement, well more of a reminder, saying the plant was still illegal under federal law. A Gallup poll released Monday found 64% of U.S. adults believe federal drug officials should ignore marijuana possession in Colorado and in Washington, which officially legalized possession last week.
