(Image Source: ESPN ) BY SCOTT MALONE ANCHOR CHRISTIAN BRYANT Tragedy strikes the world of extreme sports as 25-year-old snowmobiler Caleb Moore reportedly died Thursday due to injuries he suffered in a crash during the X Games. Moore crashed while trying to perform a backflip on this jump in the snowmobile freestyle competition - in which riders navigate their 450-pound snowmobiles over a series of jumps in 75 seconds. ( Video via KVIA ) Moore’s routine went very wrong in mid-air, and his snowmobile came down on top of him. He walked away from the accident, but later developed bleeding around his heart. A family spokesperson told reporters he died Thursday morning. Moore’s crash has put the safety of the sport into the spotlight. A writer for the National Post spoke with Snowmobiler Levi LaVallee, who said the X Games attracts people who push the envelope. “Anyone who competes has that drive to succeed, to go bigger than the next person or be the first one to do it.” It’s worth pointing out that LaVallee has a bit of a laundry list of injuries himself thanks to the X Games. In late 2010 he cracked his pelvis, broke several ribs, collapsed both lungs and cracked three vertebrae - all while attempting a distance jump on his snowmobile. ESPN both organizes and televises the X Games every year. The network issued a statement Tuesday saying in part.... “We will conduct a thorough review ... and adopt any appropriate changes to future X Games. For 18 years we have worked closely on safety issues ... Still, when the world’s best compete at the highest level in any sport, risks remain. Caleb was a four-time X Games medalist attempting a move he has landed several times previously.” One reporter who covered this year’s X Games spoke with several of the riders in the snowmobile competitions. He told Outside the Lines the riders believed it was the safest X Games yet. “They professed that this was the safest they’ve ever seen. The slope angles, the landing angles, the ramps, the ramp additions were all perfect, they have input on that. I talked to a couple guys who said it couldn’t be any safer.” A writer for the Denver Post says despite the years of science that have gone into extreme sports and all of the precautions, the human factor can still trump it all. “Even the best athletes can hiccup, as Moore did when he underrotated a backflip and flew over his handlebars … The tiniest bobble or miscalculation can trigger tragedy, especially when spinning and flipping 40 feet above cement-like snow.” Moore’s reported death is the first ever in the 17-year history of the Winter X Games.
