Building a Loft Bed
Hear the DIY basics for building a loft bed brought to you by DIY Network.
A loft bed can do wonders for a ho-hum kid's bedroom and it's basically just a wooden mattress box on stilts.
Pine or hard Redwood are great for materials however treated lumbers are not considered safe for a child’s bed.
The bed needs 3 feet of clearance to the ceiling. You want to cut all your pieces first, the mattress box, the base, and the post then - and paint. Lag bolts and screws should be used when assembling. Nails are not safe for this project.
Place the mattress box against the post then screw together. Attach the interior of the mattress box to t he base and a ladder made from one inch lumber should be screwed to the box to hold it steady.
After a quick clean up, add a colorful new throw on the bed and some fun chairs in the space underneath and your child’s plain boring bedroom will be a super place to hang out with friends.
