Channel 4 London has details. “The soldier from 28 Engineer Regiment was shot in the Nahr-e Saraj district in Helmand Province. The suspect is believed to have first fired at colleagues before being killed by return fire.” The attack injured six other British soldiers and at least one Afghan. The soldier opened fire on Afghan and British colleagues from a guard tower, making it the first insider attack of 2013, otherwise known as a “green-on-blue” incident. According to the Los Angeles Times , in 2012... 61 foreign soldiers and contractors were killed in 45 insider attacks. In 2011, 35 died in 21 insider attacks. The BBC picks up on the deadly trend. “Of course, this has been one of the growing tensions we’ve seen in Afghanistan's relationships with its foreign allies. There’s been a huge rise in these ‘green-on-blue’, so called ‘insider’ attacks.” According to the Christian Science Monitor , the Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack but Afghan officials are skeptical of the group’s involvement, saying it oftens falsely claims responsibility. The president of Afghanistan and top Afghan officials are meeting with President Obama Friday in Washington for a previously scheduled meeting about, among other things, the Afghan army and foreign military aid.
