Captain Joe Cacciola: Hi! I am Captain Joe Cacciola and we are onboard 64th charter boat, the sea star out today with a bunch of wonderful and hardworking marine pilots from Miramar and I am going to give you the tip of the week. Now, I've told these fellows earlier about this but I am going to repeat it for our viewing audience.
Today, as you saw during the episode, we were catching some really big Benita. These for the most part over 8 pounds; they went over to 12 pounds. There is a lot of times though when you see fish like that but they are really touchy. They are not going to bite on 20 or 30 pound test and as you could see sometimes we run around this boat three or four times with a fish.
During that 15 or 20 minute fight, if you had lighter line you may get broken off. So, if you encounter a spool like that and they really don't want to bite but you see them a lot. Instead of dropping down in pound test going down to 10 or 12 pound test which is likely to break because of such large fish.
Try putting on about 2 to 3 feet of fluorocarbon leader; okay and that will make your line almost disappear in the water completely. A lot of times that will entice those Benita to come up and bite and then you still have your 20 to 30 pound test up here but you will have the fluorocarbon and you will get more bites that way. So, that's my best advice.
So, if you are in a bunch of touchy big Benita, try the fluorocarbon it will catch you some fish and that's the tip of the week.
