We were very surprised and those allegations did not come from us." 8. VARIOUS EXTERIORS OF SECURITY ENTRANCE TO SILVERLAKES GATED COMMUNITY STORY: Police in Pretoria confirmed on Thursday (February 14) that a 30-year-old woman had been shot and killed at the home of South Africa's Olympic and Paralympic track star Oscar Pistorius. The 26-year-old Pistorius, known as the "Blade Runner" for his racing prosthetics, was arrested and police said they had opened a murder case after an early morning incident at the upmarket Silverlakes gated community on the outskirts of the capital. "We can confirm that there was a shooting incident this morning at the home of the well known Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius," South African national police spokesperson Denise Beukes told reporters outside the residential complex in Pretoria. "At this stage we can confirm a young woman, a 30-year-old woman, did die on the scene of gunshot wounds. A 26-year-old male has been arrested and has been charged with murder." Model and Reeva Steenkamp was reported to have been dating Pistorius for a year. In the social pages of last weekend's Sunday Independent she described him as having "impeccable" taste. "His gifts are always thoughtful," she was quoted as saying. Some of her last Twitter postings indicated she was looking forward to celebrating Valentine's Day on Thursday with him. "What do you have up your sleeve for your love tomorrow???" she posted. Pistorius, who races wearing carbon fibre prosthetic blades after he was born without a fibula in both legs, was the first double amputee to run in the Olympics and reached the 400 metre semi-finals in London 2012. In last year's Paralympics he suffered his first loss over 200 metres in nine years. After the race he questioned the legitimacy of Brazilian winner Alan Oliveira's prosthetic blades, though he was quick to express his regret for the comments. South Africa has some of the world's highest rates of violent crime, and many home owners have weapons to defend themselves against intruders. Beukes revealed this was not the first time police had been called to Pistorius' home. "I can't confirm whether it's related to the person who has been arrested but I can confirm there has previously been incidents at the home of Mr Oscar Pistorius," she said. While exact details of what happened remained unclear, Beukes said only two people had been present in Pistorius' house at the time of the shooting. "So, no, the only two people on the premises were the resident and the deceased and again the number of shots fired are part of the ongoing investigation." Johannesburg's Talk Radio 702 said Pistorius was believed to have shot his girlfriend in the head and arm. The radio had said before the murder charge that he might have mistaken her for a burglar. But Beukes said those reports had surprised police. We were very surprised and those allegations did not come from us." The man charged with murder was due to appear in court later on Thursday.
