(Image Source: Blue Star Line ) BY KERRY LEARY If you’ve always wanted to set sail on the Titanic... you’re in luck--- an Australian billionaire is planning to build a replica of the original cruise ship. Tuesday’s announcement... complete with blueprints of the Titanic II ... is making some waves. “ On the heels of the vomit cruise in the Gulf of Mexico, well, they say, timing is everything. And, look, the global launch of Titanic II.” Some believe people would be hesitant to board the second Titanic just because of recent events, like the Triumph being stranded and the Costa Concordia disaster. But ITV spoke with a distant relative of Captain Smith, the original Titanic’s master, who doesn’t approve for another reason. “It’s in very poor taste. Admittedly there are no survivors still around, but there are relations of survivors and I think it’s... I don't approve of it I suppose.” Despite some resistance, the mining magnate who announced the plan had some back up, according to The Guardian. “Perhaps nervous about the idea of reminding people of the suffering and agony of the world’s most famous maritime disaster, Palmer was careful to bring out a descendant of a Titanic survivor to endorse the project. Helen Benziger was a granddaughter of Molly Brown, a socialite who became famous for persuading a lifeboat to turn around and search for survivors. She heartily backed the new venture.” The new ship will follow the planned trans-Atlantic path of its doomed namesake-- making its way from Southampton, England to New York City. It will even have the same floor plans. The BBC spoke with Palmer about his new investment. “We’ll have the exact same cabins as the original Titanic. If you wanna go in third class, eat potatoes, have irish stew, dance around in a circle with an irish band, you’ll be able to do it.” Palmer said during his news conference Tuesday that he won’t deem the ship unsinkable... but the ship will be equipped with a wide span of life boats. He called it the safest ship in the world. But what about the superstitious people out there? Some shared feelings on the internet about the ship that some believe is already doomed.. A writer for the Consumerist notes, “Of all the legendary, cursed names in all the world, nothing says ‘yeah, that’s not gonna work’ like ‘Titanic.’ … While there are surely plenty of Titanicophiles (made that word up, deal with it) who’ve pictured themselves on the decks of the doomed ship, actually climbing aboard and entrusting your life to such an ill-named boat on the open sea is a whole other story.” And a writer for Jezebel had a similar feeling, noting, “ Once finished, the Titanic II will accommodate 2,400 guests, none of whom are likely to drown, have a smoke stack collapse on them or freeze in the Atlantic Ocean at any point in the journey. The Titanic II is slated to set sail in 2016, a year when no headlines will read ‘2,400 Idiot Millionaires Die in Shipwreck We Should Have Seen Coming.’" Palmer says 40,000 people are already interested in buying tickets to sale on the maiden voyage... some allegedly willing to pay $1 million PER TICKET. Oh, and costumes, of course, will be provided for passenger... if you’re up to look the part... of whatever class you should decide to ride in.
