Audra Lowe: 50,000 American shoppers and Better Homes and Gardens readers were asked to vote for their favorite new products on the shelves and now the top picks have been chosen.
Here to reveal the results of the best new products awards is Lifestyle editor of Better Homes and Gardens magazine, Katherine Pushkar. Good to have you here.
Katherine Pushkar: Nice to be here Audra.
Audra Lowe: 50,000 people?
Katherine Pushkar: 50,000 people and 135 products.
Audra Lowe: A lot of categories.
Katherine Pushkar: A lot of categories, yeah.
Audra Lowe: So were people really passionate about what they were voting on?
Katherine Pushkar: People were and what we’ve found which is really interesting is that even with the economy people really want to try new products. They're just interested in trying new things. So that’s what these awards are all about.
Audra Lowe: A lot of new transit you guys found out in this article too. One of them is a lot of people staying at home a lot more, they want that convenience too.
Katherine Pushkar: Yeah it’s still the economy. They're staying at home, they're eating out less and they're cooking for themselves. And so they like convenience like we have this Old El Paso fiesta rice which was a category winner.
Audra Lowe: This is one of the picks right?
Katherine Pushkar: It’s one of the picks yeah. And it’s really easy to make and you just zap it in the microwave and it’s great for people who are on the go, busy moms. And then the other thing we found was that health was really important. Seven in ten of the people surveyed they were really interested in having health as an added value to their products.
So we have things like the special cake crackers with multi-grain, they're really tasty but they also have some health benefit. And this Campbell soup it’s all natural. It’s great.
Audra Lowe: Right. And then the smoothies obviously—
Katherine Pushkar: Smoothie is actually the winner in the food category.
Audra Lowe: Really?
Katherine Pushkar: Yeah. It was number one and what people like is that it’s really convenient it’s like a smoothie kit, you just pop it into a blender add some milk and go and it’s also $3.00.
Audra Lowe: Not bad!
Katherine Pushkar: Yeah, and you get two servings and it compare favorably to the smoothie bar.
Audra Lowe: Now this next category here is for household products and a lot of people were saying that they like products that have multiple uses, two-in-one, three-in-one right?
Katherine Pushkar: Most women are multitaskers and they want the same thing from their products.
Audra Lowe: Right.
Katherine Pushkar: They want them to do more than one thing.
Audra Lowe: So what do you have here?
Katherine Pushkar: We have the pledge which actually has a sexy new package, but it’s a multi-surface cleaner so you can use it on wood, on your countertops and anything. And then the Cascade which was the winner, it’s an all-in-one tab, you don’t have to rinse your dishes everything comes out clean and it just saves you time.
Audra Lowe: We like that very much too. And then the Downy and then you’ve got another product.
Katherine Pushkar: Yeah, these are all like multitaskers and the Downy is just really great, people just really responded to the qualities of it.
Audra Lowe: Personal care, this is the last category that we’ll talk about today too. What are people looking for, what were the trends that you guys found there?
Katherine Pushkar: 85% of the people said that the first thing they look for was value, which is really interesting because our number one product the Olay ProX intensive wrinkle protocol is actually three products that costs $60.00 and it gives you the same thing that you're going to get at a prescription or at the beauty counter in the department store. But for a better value and its actually really good and like the kids again with the multitasking, it’s a two-in-one shampoo. You get in wash their hair and go out.
Audra Lowe: It seems like the common theme throughout is that multiple uses that’s a big priority right?
Katherine Pushkar: Value, multiple use and convenience—huge, huge factors.
Audra Lowe: That’s a great job over there, 50,000 people so they all know what they want, right?
Katherine Pushkar: Yeah they do.
Audra Lowe: Thanks so much Katherine good to have you here.
Katherine Pushkar: Thanks for having me.
