Best Bras for Breastfeeding

Dr. Lisa Masterson: And our next guest has a bra issue that affects many women after they leave the delivery room.

Catherine: My name’s Catherine and I'm a new mom to twins. They’re three months old. I'm doing a lot of breastfeeding. I don’t know what size I am, 36-D, 36 DD, 38-D? It depends on time of day if I need to breastfeed or if I need a pump or I just pumped. Yeah, it fluctuates. I am looking for a bra that is comfortable, supportive and accessible. Is that too much to ask?

Susan Nethero: This is gaping quite a bit here, there’s like big holes and pockets here. This bra can’t possibly support you.

Dr. Lisa Masterson: Catherine is here too and Susan what did you do with Catherine to help with her breastfeeding?

Susan Nethero: You know it’s important to have a supportive bra especially when you’re nursing because you’re filling up and then you know the flow is out. So what we want to do is make sure that we get the lift up on the front and also to have great class and make it easy to work with so that -- she’s got twins, nursing that’s a big job. What we did we really -- you can see in the front she’s really falling down here and the cup is not really sufficient. It's not full enough for her.

Dr. Lisa Masterson: That lifted you up and it’s cute to boot because you want something that’s pretty.

Susan Nethero: And you can see now all of a sudden she’s getting lift up, the cup depth is right. She’s able to take it down easily to nourish the children with out beating them up, right? You mention you hit them in the head sometimes.

Catherine: Yeah.

Dr. Lisa Masterson: You don’t want to hit them with a flap so you knock them out they need to be awake to breastfeed.

Susan Nethero: And one of the things I love as you mentioned.

Dr. Lisa Masterson: Look how cute that is.

Susan Nethero: But look how lovely this is, this is cotton lining here. It’s super soft, absorbent.

Dr. Lisa Masterson: It keeps you from getting mastitis or infections in the breasts.

Susan Nethero: Exactly. No under wires in the early stage when you first start nourishing particularly don’t want those under wires laying against the milk ducts that are at the base of the breast.

Dr. Lisa Masterson: Right and you felt good with this?

Catherine: Yeah, I actually took a little bit of getting used to the amount of pressure around the rib cage because I was used to having such a lose bra. But it feels better. I feel much more supported.
