Over the weekend the American Psychiatric Association approved revisions to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders — popularly known as the DSM. The book helps researchers, health insurance companies and policy makers when referencing the classification of mental disorders. VIA WPIX : “Changing the term gender identity disorder to gender dysphoria which means emotional distress over one's gender.” ThinkProgress reports the move is being hailed in the transgender community as removing the stigma associated with the term “disorder.” “...this has provided rhetorical carte blanche to describe the entire trans committee as disordered, delusional, and mentally ill.” Then again, a media research associate with the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation points out — some fear losing the “disorder” status could create barriers to health insurance coverage. That’s because, the thinking goes, when something is categorized as having a disorder, insurance companies are more likely to cover related costs. Those related costs, reports American Progress , include “... mental health services, hormone therapy, and surgeries involving the primary and/or secondary sex characteristics.” It wasn’t until the 1970s that homosexuality was declassified as a mental disorder. The fifth edition of the DSM is scheduled for released May 2013.
