Image Source: BBC BY PAULA HUNT ANCHOR ZACH TOOMBS   Viewers and listeners of the British Broadcasting Corporation ’s television and radio programming could wake up to blank screens and empty airways Monday morning. That’s because the union representing the BBC’s journalists has announced its members are planning a 24-hour strike Feb. 18. The strike comes in the face of BBC plans to eliminate around 30 jobs as part of its Delivery Quality First program – a cost-savings project that will slash about 2,000 jobs over the next five years. Because the long-term cuts will affect every area of its news division, the National Union of Journalists argues: “The BBC is not just about providing high-quality TV and radio. . .  That is why we must make sure the public is on our side and understands that this action is all about saving a top quality, independent broadcasting organization.” The Guardian quotes a BBC representative as saying it couldn’t speculate on whether or not programming would be disrupted. "Our priority is to deliver the scheduled services to viewers and listeners. It is too early to speculate on potential changes to the schedule or which services may be affected." BBC journalists and technicians threatened to strike in 2012 during Queen Elizabeth’s Jubilee celebrations. The last time the journalists went on strike was in 2011 in a dispute also over job cuts.
