(Image Source: Al Jazeera ) BY JOHN O’CONNOR Anchor Logan Tittle Officials in Bangladesh say at least 100 people were killed after a fire engulfed a garment factory on the outskirts of the capital. Al Jazeera has more . “Workers were trapped when flames swept through the building just outside the capital Dhaka. Most died in the fire but some were killed when they were forced to jump out of the windows.”   According to CNN , “Bangladesh's ready-made garments make up 80% of the country's $24 billion in annual exports.”  A correspondent for the BBC says the fire is already one of the most deadly in the country’s history, and that the death toll may rise as firefighters clear the way up to the higher floors of the factory. “One fire officer told me earlier that could have been caused by poor electrical wiring, which has been the reason for many other accidents here in Bangladesh. But still they are investigating … ”  NBC News reports … “safety standards at the factories are poor and not enforced strictly, causing scores of accidents each year.” And the New York Times says tensions have been particularly high in Bangladesh lately as workers “have been demanding an increase in minimum wages” and safer working environments.   According to the Associated Press, workers are clearing their way to the top floors on Sunday as the search for any remaining survivors continues.
