The Cinemark movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, will see its first patrons since the June 2012 shooting... ...but the theater is opening to mixed reviews from family and friends of the victims. CNN explains. “A large group of the family members have gotten together, and they’ve decided they’re going to boycott the reopening ceremony here and the theater chain in general. They say this theater chain is just out to make money...” The basis of that collective anger stemmed from an invitation sent on Dec. 27 by Cinemark USA Inc . to victim’s families to take part in a “night of remembrance.” As KKTV reports, the family members of some victims felt that Cinemark’s approach to reopening the theater was tasteless. “Cinemark has never offered their condolences... They want to use this as a stepping stone to try and boost ticket sales.” The families of nine of the victims sent a letter in response to Cinemark’s invitation, saying, “ During the holiday we didn’t think anyone or anything could make our grief worse...” They continued to call the timing of the invitation “disgusting,” “appalling,” and “callous.” Since the shooting that killed 12 people and injured dozens of others, the newly renamed Century Aurora complex has undergone nearly $1,000,000 in cosmetic changes, including new carpeting, fresh paint, corresponding letters for each theater, new digital screens and a mural on an outside wall. Sources report both Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan and Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper were in attendance for the reopening ceremony. Thursday also marked the filing deadline for lawsuits against the University of Colorado - Denver. Sources report the lawyers for 14 different people plan to sue Dr. Lynne Fenton, the school’s psychiatrist that treated James Holmes, for alleged negligence.
