Art of Graficas and Evans Sculptures in Nantucket

Audrey: Graficas, an Evan’s sculpture recently move to Broad Street.
Graficas owner Lynnette Mautner is no stranger to the art
community. Having been a part of it for over 30 years, she’s
developed quite an eye for talent.

Lynnette Mautner: One of the artists I feature is Daniel Sutherland and he photograph
exclusively Nantucket scenes. A sculpture artist that we carry is
Nancy Simmons. I've also been selling her works for over 35 years
which is kind of fun. One of my loves is artist’s books, and artist’s
books are just a different format for somebody to explain
themselves in book format. So their all handed done, all pieced
together. I rotate this case about once a week.

It takes some quite a number of years to sort of pull your stable of
artists together.

Ryan: Because you're gonna save it all, the Nantucket talent. It must be
quite a task a little bit down to make it all work when you come
here.

Lynnette Mautner Well it's it, but you know there is so many talents here on
Nantucket. We are very blessed to have a strong art community.

Audrey: Behind Graficas is Evans sculpture where Ryan and I meet
sculpture John Evans.

John Evans: I really consider myself a -- I do a lot of things. But I love the
subtractive idea. I don’t assemble. I take away. This is a -- it's a 12-
foot piece of lacy wood, got it in Florida after the big hurricanes.
And it's a single piece of wood.

Ryan: And John, how long would a piece like this take you to create?

John Evans: I hate to say, I had on the bench for about three years. But it gives
it makes a good story. Those people ask me how long it takes, I
can tell them, three years.

Audrey: Well thank you John for showing us around. It's beautiful little
space.

John Evans: Thanks very much, thanks for coming. I really appreciate it.

Audrey: Thank you. We look forward to coming back.

pieces.
