Armstrong’s attorney says Lance wants to testify to the International Cycling Union and the World Anti-Doping Agency. This comes a week after Armstrong confessed to doping during his career and lying about it. (Via Fox News ) But the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency has given Armstrong an ultimatum: testify under oath about his use of performance enhancing drugs by February 6th, or his lifetime ban will be irreversible. But.... (Via WBNS ) “Armstrong’s attorney says that’s not going to happen. He cites scheduling conflicts as one reason. The other is that Armstrong and his attorney do not believe the US agency has any real power.”  (Via CNN ) But the agency says Armstrong has had more than enough time to clear his schedule. They claim Armstrong has known about the deadline since their meeting with him in December. USA Today is reporting that another reason for Armstrong’s possible decision to steer clear of the USADA is he “still has issues with [agency] chief Travis Tygart” whom Armstrong’s attorney says is “piling on [to Armstrong’s grief] through more appearances … on 60 Minutes.” In his latest appearance on the program, Tygart claims Armstrong lied during his interview with Oprah Winfrey. “It’s just simply not true. The access they had to inside information, to how the tests work, what tests went in place at what time … He was on an entirely different playing field than all the other athletes.”  (Via WFOR ) And while Armstrong is avoiding the USADA, the president of the International Cycling Union is singing a similar sounding tune. “What I want him to come in there and do is tell the truth about everything that went down, because he didn’t do it in the TV programs … because that’s what’s needed to help the sport and to help us move on.”  (Via Al Jazeera ) But the UCI now wants to suspend its own probe into the Armstrong affair, and pursue the creation of a truth and reconciliation commission. McQuaid said the independent probe was “Very expensive. For the resources of the UCI, it is quite a lot.” And he added the cost of a truth and reconciliation committee would be shared with the World Anti Doping Agency. (Via Bloomberg ) But the Associated Press reports several critics say McQuaid and other leaders covered up suspicious Armstrong test results during his string of Tour de France victories, and improperly accepted donations from him totaling $125,000. One of those critics told Sky News the president should step down if cycling really wants to start cleaning up its act. “The benefit for cycling of McQuaid stepping down and Hein Verbruggen leaving the sport would be to create a perception of ‘Now we have a chance of having a UCI that we can trust.”
