(Image Source: KABC )   BY KATIE BRENNAN American Airlines and US Airways are on the verge of merging and if they do- the result would be the world’s largest airline--or, as ABC calls it, a mega-mega-airline. The news outlet reports the merger, which has been speculated about for more than a year, could happen as early as next week. “And even though American has been the one in bankruptcy, most believe the new airline would keep the American logo, since it's best-known. And American just revealed a new look, which it's unlikely to get rid of so soon.” OK, so it makes sense to keep the look, but American Airlines management led the company into bankruptcy in November 2011.. causing some to conjecture that most of the new airline’s management would move over from US Airways. The Wall Street Journal reports there are still a few details to figure out. “Significant points of the deal, including how to split ownership of the airline and how to arrange board seats and management ranks, remain unresolved.” WFAA-TV reports , “Sources tell News 8 that US Airways CEO Doug Parker will likely take over, and AMR CEO Tom Horton will be given an honorary position on the board such as non-executive chairman.”   But that decision could cause some problems with American’s labor unions, who have publicly stated they don’t want American’s management running the company. Luckily for them, KXAS reports Horton’s board position would be one “in which he had no real power” The new company could have a market cap of $10 billion. But a bigger airline may not mean a bigger deal on your next fare.. it could actually mean higher prices because of less competition, but CBS News predicts things may not stay that way for long. “Bigger airlines don't stay bigger for that much longer. They tend to cut capacity and routes, especially domestically, and go for higher yielding international routes. Look for that to happen.” And this isn’t exactly uncharted air.   CNN reports it looks more like a trend.... “It comes after, you know, five or six years of pretty big mergers, United/Continental is the largest. Delta/Northwest merged in 2008.” Reports say American’s parent company is planning to meet on Monday to discuss the agreement and an announcement could come as early as Tuesday.
